Homeschool Learning: Create Art

This summer I was being super intentional with the first 90 minutes of our day. It’s during this time that we’re engaging in intentional learning together.

Next up is all about art.

Art happens all day long in our house. Colored pencils, glue, markers, paper, and scissors are strewn about the house. My relationship with this is complicated: it drives me crazy and warms my heart. What’s a mom to do?!

This summer we’ve been creating time to be more intentional in our art.

Coloring with Clay

Early in the summer, we spent a series of mornings with this really fun coloring with clay kit by Faber Castell. The idea is straightforward– instead of coloring in pictures with markers or crayons– you use clay! The kit comes with all you need: picture boards to fill-in, a wide variety of good-quality, colorful clay, tools, and tips on how to create a picture that turns out well. Kids have to spend a great deal of time and energy using their fine motor skills- pinching and twisting and flattening and smoothing. Great for kids who are interested in trying out a new medium!

Quilling

Quilling (the art of swirled paper) is a fun art project for parents and kids to do side-by-side. If your kids haven’t tried it before, a tree is a great first project (like this cute one from Ginger Casa).

3D Sand Art

Also in the vein of unconventional ways to color in a picture, this time we used a mixture of sand and paint! The sand is inside the paint, so kids can squeeze the sandy paint right out of the bottles, making it super easy and having a relatively low-mess factor for younger kids. The kids enjoyed the templates provided in the kit, but they LOVED getting to create their own style with the blank sheets. This kit came with several different colors of paint, watercolors, creation tools, and art boards.

Optical Illusions

Kids of all ages love to be tricky, which is why optical illusions are so fun! It’s pretty easy to draw this optical illusion of a 3D hand. All you need is paper and markers!

Making Mini Erasers

My older girls loved this eraser-making kit from Klutz. It comes with a book and several blocks of eraser clay. You can follow the directions to piece together different erasers- cakes, footballs, sloths, trolls, or you can create your own. Bake them in the oven on low for a short period of time, let them cool, and ta-da! You have yourself a sweet set of erasers. The girls liked making these and giving them out to their friends.

Pointillism Art

All you need to teach your kids about pointillism are some Q-tips, paint, and thick white paper! The Artful Parent has a great post with some ideas about how to get started, and some different ideas to try out.
